Die Indianerthematik hat das Filmschaffen beschäftigt, seit es den Film gibt, sogar sehr früh auch die Indigenen selbst. Mit Hollywood wurde die Verbreitung zwar global, aber Hollywood prägte den Western, in dem Indigenen die Rolle feindseliger, hinterwäldlerischer Rotten zugeteilt wurde - die eigentliche Westernthematik spielt sich aber unter kriminellen Weißen und Siedlern ab und wird hier weitgehend nicht thematisiert. Erst seit den Fünfzigerjahren tauchen leise Anzeichen einer Identifikation mit den "Wilden" auf, denen schon mal zugebilligt wird, dass es sich um Menschen handelt. Der Durchbruch zum "Indianerfilm" kommt erst 1990 mit "Dances with Wolves" von Kevin Costner. Seither haben "Indianer" im Film ein Gesicht, aber erst seit der Jahrtausendwende beginnen amerikanische Filmemacher, die Verbrechen der Kolonisierung aufzuarbeiten. Bei den Produktionen der erstarkenden indigenen Filmszene gibt es heute kaum ein anderes Thema - was in den Jahrhunderten seit Kolumbus, und zwar bis heute passiert ist, dürfte Stoff für das nächste halbe Jahrtausend enthalten.

The subject of Native Americans has occupied filmmakers since the very inception of cinema—and, indeed, from a very early stage, Indigenous people themselves were filmmakers. With the rise of Hollywood, the reach of films became global; however, Hollywood defined the Western genre, in which Indigenous people were assigned the role of hostile, backward hordes—while the true thematic core of the Western—the conflicts among criminal white figures and settlers—are not covered here. It was not until the 1950s that faint signs of identification with the "savages" began to emerge—figures who were, for the first time, occasionally acknowledged as human beings. The true breakthrough for the "Indian film" genre did not arrive until 1990, with Kevin Costner’s *Dances with Wolves*. Since then, "Indians" in cinema have acquired a human face; yet, it is only since the turn of the millennium that American filmmakers have begun to grapple with the crimes of colonization. In the productions emerging from the burgeoning Indigenous film scene of today, there is scarcely any other subject—for the events that have transpired over the centuries since Columbus—right up to the present day—likely contain enough material to fuel storytelling for the next half-millennium.
